AI in seismic is a vendor pitch in Aberdeen. In Brazil it is a production line.

Walk the Digital Transformation Area and you will hear AI-powered seismic sold as a frontier. The national operator in Brazil already cites AI and big data as enabler of recent pre-salt discoveries. The buyer is past the demo.

01What the EAGE programme says this week

The Future of Seismic and Digital Transformation tracks are anchored on machine learning for interpretation, automated velocity model building, and foundation models trained on multi-basin data. Most talks frame AI as the next step. The pitch is novelty.

02What Brazil already does

The national operator publicly attributes part of its recent exploration success to AI and big-data workflows running on pre-salt data. Service companies operating in Brazil have been required to integrate ML interpretation into deliverables for years. There is no greenfield to convert. The buyer is in production.

03Where the foreign vendor trips

Selling the algorithm as the differentiator. In Brazil the algorithm is table stakes; what wins is data residency, integration with the operator's interpretation stack, and continuity of support across procurement cycles measured in years. A vendor with a sharper model and no local presence loses to a vendor with a comparable model and a São Paulo office.

The technical conversation in Brazil is not whether AI works. It is whose AI gets to touch the data, and who is in the room three years from now when the contract renews.Rodrigo Eiras
